Taken from Perfect a novel by Ellen Hopkins

Please respond to the following excerpt:

Cara Sierra Sykes

Perfect?

How

do you define a word without

concrete meaning? To each

his own, the saying goes, so

why

push to attain an ideal

state of being that no two

random people will agree is

where

you want to be? Faultless.

Finished. Incomparable. People

can never be these, and anyway,

when

did creating a flawless facade

become a more vital goal

than learning to love the person

who

lives inside your skin?

The outside belongs to others.

Only you should decide for you—

what

is perfect.

  1. I think the poem is basically what everyone at one point has thought about. How people look at you, and how you judge others without even knowing it. I like the poem, but that may be just because I love the author already.

  2. I didn't really understand this poem fully until it was explained more, although I think it was a beautiful poem very detailed. I agree 100 % with this poem. There is no right or wrong for being perfect, each person will never agree on the same definition to "perfect" we all see perfect differently. Each of us have different perfect to us, we all are our own unique person. BUT THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS PERFECT.

  3. Good poem, it's so true, perfect should be whatever perfect means to yourself not anybody else because everyone has their own definition of perfect and there not all the same so whatever you think perfect is, that's what it is, nobody can change what think except yourself.

  7. I also believe that a person shouldn't be striving to be someone else. When the author says the outside belongs to others, i think she means other people can't see inside of you, they can't feel what you are feeling. But when the author says you need to love yourself, I think that she saying you should be happy with yourself and know that you were created the way you were. Every life is a precious miracle and every person should think it is perfect, and they should believe they are perfect.
