Rain Man More then Autism

By now, certainly, you have formed an opinion concerning the movie Rainman. Please take some time to respond to the following questions:

A) What was the director's overall purpose ( excluding the obvious) of the story of Raymond and his brother Charlie?
B) Given what you know about the disorder of autism, was the portrayal an accurate depiction of someone who suffers from this disorder? Be specific.
C) What about the story line did you like and also dislike?
D) Give the film an overall grade for our film critique class. Justify your grade.

  1. a) I can't think of any other reason than to show how life is for an autistic person, and how people react to something they just don't understand.
    b) Yes. The actor that played Raymond did a very good job of being an autistic man. The repetition and intolerance of change was done very well.
    c) I like that Charlie came to love and maybe even understand a little but of what his brother was going through. What I didn't like was the way that Charlie acted towards his brother in the beginning, the way he was so insensitive and uncaring towards someone with that disability and even his own brother.
    d) I give the movie a B+. It wasn't my favorite movie, but I did like the message and the characters evolving.

    1. A)I think the directors purpose was to show people that even though Raymond has autism it doesn't make him any different from us so he should be treated like any other person.
B)Yes it was accurate like when Raymond would freak out about loud noises and little things like that, I think the actor who played Raymond did a real good job.
C)I liked when Charlie started to realize that he really didn't care about the money so much anymore but he cared about his brother Raymond and his disability and helping Ray live a happy and normal life. What I didn't like was when Charlie only cared about getting his share of the money his brother Raymond had got from there dad passing away.
      D) I give the movie a B+, because it's an old movie and at times it was hard to follow but, the message of the movie was good and that's why i gave it a B+.

    2. Being the parent of a special needs boy, I can understand some of Charlie's frustration with the care of his brother. I like the underlying theme of "love of a brother" that the director built the overall relationship around. The portrayal of this strange autistic world, in my opinion, was very well done. Grade A

    3. Charlie, as you stated, was very slow to realize the world in which his brother operated. The performance by Dustin Hoffman was spot on. People who are not face with special needs people have a hard time understanding some of the frustrations that are attached to disorders such as autism. Good Review. Grade A

  2. A Showing truth in the "don't judge a book by it's cover" moto. And proving that raymond had much more to him than meets the eye. Raymond being the stereotypical autistic man.

B I think so, yes. The amount of "odd" behavior Ray displayed was definitely accurate for an autistic person. Specifically, Raymond had many obsessions. like recording TV shows and doing specific things at specific times, paranoia relating to numerous different things from air travel and buying underwear, and also had a massively active mind. So active in fact, that he could memorize specific dates, times, numbers and any SOLID data. His mind functioned in a way that allowed him to record concrete truths, but could not grasp the concept of Theory; he couldn't tell / analyze jokes and riddles, didn't pick up on social cues and didn't seem to have any understanding of right and wrong aside from what he had memorized.

C I liked the change in tone from raymond's brother as he began to understand raymond more as a person, and as a brother other than an autistic stranger.

D B-. I think the movie was a bit Loose in a sense. Lost me for a bit, but then again i didnt watch in one sitting. The storyline was definitely inspiring, and well played out. good acting, and
an accurat portrayal of autism in its extreme. The ending in my opinion was a bit unsatisfactory. but regardless, a good film.

    1. I like how you grasped the inconsistencies of the autistic mind when referencing the simple tasks Raymond couldn't perform and then the intricacies of his "idiot Savant". I think Dustin Hoffman, Raymond, gave an outstanding performance. Grade A

    1. A) Im not really sure what the purpose was other then to see what it was like to deal with autism

      B) I dont know much about autism, but the actor did a good job playing the part and showing what it would be like to have autism.

C)I liked how the brother started out looking for money and not really caring about raymond, but learnd that there is more to life then money, and that money come and goes, but family is family, and there not always going to be around so cherish the moments you have with them. I didnt care for some of the cheesy parts, but every movie has them.

      D) I rate the film a 7 out of 10, I really liked it but they could of put more into the movie and made it a lot better, and could of put more detail into the story. and more things that happened.

    2. Really don't understand your response to question B. In regards to the acting the general public must have disagreed since Dustin Hoffman won an Academy award for his performance.Charlie's change of attitude was the center piece of the plot of the film. Grade B

    3. This disease is so misunderstood but it was this film that first brought this disorder to light. There has been alot more research done in this area recently and the findings would shock some of us. It seems that some autism is tied to a drug called thymerisol which is given to children nationwide in their 2 year old DPT shots. It is reported today that 1 in every 160 children contracts autism. Thanks for your opinion. Grade A

  4. A) I think the director's overall purpose was to create a movie that involved a mental disorder and a family crisis. In the end of the movie, Charlie had a change of heart and wanted an actual relationship with his brother, Raymond.
B)Yes it was. Raymond was always distracted or flustered.
    C) I personally didn't enjoy this movie. But I think for what the director was trying to portray, was great. The story line was very boring.
    D) C It was a good effort by the director but, it was a very dry movie. It didn't intrest me at all.

  5. A) The directors' overall purpose of the story of Raymond and his brother Charlie is that the director wanted to show how the life of a Autism person, and how they react in certain situations. Everyone deserves to be treated equally, though people with disorders may need more attention then others. Charlie, Raymond's brother wanted to take part in his life and actually have a real relationship with him. I think Charlie think this disorder can bring them closer.

    B) Yes, I think the portrayal was very accurate of depiction of someone who suffers from this protocolar disorder of Autism. His behavior matched to be a Autism person. Raymond never picked up upon social cues. He acted like he never knew right from wrong. Raymond was sensitive to loud noises and would act out.

    C) At the beginning of the "story" Charlie was a uncaring brother, whom didn't understand his brother Raymond's disorder. I didn't like that, but towards the end of it Charlie came to a conclusion that no matter what or who has a disorder you should care from them and treat them like you want to be treated. Charlie became patient and understanding of his brother Raymond and his disorder that he has been suffering. Charlie learned to become kind hearted and sensitive to his brother, I thought that was adorable.

    D) I give this movie an A. This movie was great for getting the point across. I think it is great to make movies about type of things that you can and need to be more aware in reality. This stuff can really happen and that it is happening.
